Any and all steps are good for you, be they from the basement and back or through the mall. I battle daily to steal a mere 30 minutes to walk around the park. But how about taking a walk that benefits others, too?
There are lots of fun opportunities to "walk for good" in Buffalo. This weekend choose to honor those who perished on 9/11 or make a broader statement to support peace, justice and nonviolence. A fun walk along the waterfront can help beat Parkinsons.
As the 15th anniversary of 9/11 approaches this weekend, the Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk offers a great way to honor our first responders, those who lost their lives on that fateful day, and those who have been catastrophically injured while fighting for our country. The event starts at First Niagara Center at 9:00am Saturday morning. Click here to learn how to make difference.
Moving Day is an easy, three-mile walk along Buffalo's beautiful waterfront that can help beat Parkinson's, a devasting disease that affects far too many in our region. Gates open at Coca-Cola Field at 8:00am, and the walk starts at 10:00am. Walk with a team or take your steps solo. What better way to spend a Sunday morning? Register here.
Still looking for steps? Stay on the waterfront and continue walking for Peace, Justice and Nonviolence. The third annual Peace, Justice and Nonviolence and Festival and Walk of Peace on Sunday, September 11 starts on Canalside at 2:30pm, and continues until dusk. Walk for Peace and Unity along the Buffalo waterfront and gardens, and enjoy music, children’s activities, food, information tables and vendors - fun for the entire family.
If this weekend is already a blur, plan to walk for Shea's next weekend. The Shea's 5K Run & Walk starts at a very comfortable 11:30am, and follows an architecturally rich route through the Theatre District. Be sure to stay after the walk for the fabulous after-party at the Theatre Place Pavillion (right next to Shea's) for a bite to eat, a cold brew, and raffles! Registration is $15 until September 16, and just $17 at the door. Proceeds benefit Shea's and it's ongoing restoration efforts.
So don't just sit there, get up and walk! Do it for your health, and support a cause you believe in at the same time. Need more motivation? All four walks are also festivals. What a great win-win way to get your walk in!
