Rachelle Ferrell
Tralf Music Hall
Sat Mar 22
Unquestionably one of the most dynamic talents in contemporary pop music. Very few vocal artists in the industry have Ferrell’s potent combination of range, phrasing, and musicianship. Ferrell first emerged in the states with her R&B debut Rachelle Ferrell (1992), a solid collection of self-penned originals that featured a striking duet with Will Downing (‘Nothing Has Ever Felt Like This’). It was with the release of First Instrument in 1994 (recorded prior to Rachelle Ferrell) that audiences were really introduced to Ferrell’s jazz sensibilities. Official site.

Menew
Buffalo Iron Works
Sat Mar 22
“If Muse, Coldplay and The Killers had a genius, dirty lovechild – it’s name would be MENEW.” MENEW [pronounced MENU] are an alternative indie rock band composed of three brothers. On their forthcoming full-length album Mother Nature, the band - Shade [Vocals/Guitar], Key [Piano/Synthesizers], and Nathan Samuel Phillip [Drums/Vocals]--infuse instrumental intricacy into 12 dynamic and diverse tracks. Whether it's a subdued piano hum or an anthemic guitar-fueled refrain, MENEW remain unpredictable, discarding all notions of formula or convention. Say hello to the future. Official site.

Ambrose Akinmusire
Albright-Knox Art Gallery
Sun Mar 23
Not since Wynton Marsalis has a trumpeter ascended to the top of the jazz world as rapidly as Ambrose Akinmusire. Voted the #1 trumpeter in both the 2012 JazzTimes and DownBeat critics’ polls on the strength of his Blue Note debut When the Heart Emerges Glistening, “Akinmusire sounds less like a rising star than one that [is] already at great heights” (Los Angeles Times). After touring extensively with Steve Coleman while still a teen, Akinmusire studied at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz with Herbie Hancock, Terence Blanchard, and Wayne Shorter. With the formation of his current quintet, Akinmusire has found the perfect collaborators to present “limber, straight-ahead jazz with mystery and pop instincts that gets around most of the old, pervasive mainstream influences, both of trumpet playing and bandleading” (Ben Ratliff, The New York Times).
