I bought my Bills tickets back in 2002 after the worst season we had witnessed since 1985. The Bills were a dismal 3-13 in 2001 and looked nothing like the powerhouse we watched dominate the conference for almost 10 years. That team was long gone, but a new savior was on his way to town. Bledsoe came here with such promise of possibility that I bought in. I like so many believed that Drew could get us back into the spotlight, but the reality was only one New England quarterback would dominate that spotlight.
This is my 14th year as a season ticket holder and I have only watched him lose here once. Now we beat him twice at the Ralph in that stretch, however I missed Fitz-magic back in 2011 which remains my biggest regret since signing up. I have missed three games in 13 years and that is by far the one I would take back if I could. I couldn’t that day though. One of my best friends was getting married that day and I had to be there. You see, the wedding wasn’t here in Buffalo. Not too many people tie the knot on a Sunday in the fall here in Western New York. No my punishment for missing the biggest win since 2003 was to be at a wedding in Boston, Massachusetts. Furthermore, the ceremony was to take place at 3:30pm which was right around the time that game became very interesting.
I couldn’t watch it though. I couldn’t watch any of it. You see, my New England pal and his lovely bride had asked me to serve as the Justice of the Peace for their incredible day. To my surprise you can apply for a one day Justice of the Peace pass in New England so I agreed to do so. This was long before the schedule came out making it impossible to back out once it did. I have to say it was one of the coolest things I have ever done. There I am at the alter looking sharp in my Bills tie watching the updates on the IPad as “Here comes the Bride” is played by some of the most incredible musicians I have ever heard. The IPad was the perfect way to follow along simply because the congregation assumed I was reading over the notes for the ceremony. So I’m standing there with the groom to be as Lindell’s kick sailed through and I can’t believe it. The Bride stepped up to start her new life with my Beantown buddy just as the Bills did the impossible. It was one of my happiest days as a Bills fan in a very long time. Winning was great, but winning while I was there was just what the doctor ordered. I sported my Bills gear throughout the reception and quickly became hated by everyone there that wasn’t from Buffalo. I guess if you are going to miss a game like that you miss it while you are in their backyard 450 miles away. 13 years. 2 wins and I have only witnessed 1. 1.
He is 23-3 since taking over and one of those losses was that meaningless game in week 17 last year. He has 58 touchdown passes in those 26 games. That is more than he has had against anybody else. There will never be a more hated athlete in Buffalo than him. Ever! Bills fans recall the glory years of four straight appearances to the Show and hang their hat on it. He has taken them to 6 and won 4. His incredible talent and leadership is unquestionable, but all villains have many questions to answer. Well, all villains but Bad Morty. Still, his dominance over our team and his perception of this town is what makes him easy to hate. You won’t find many Bills fans that didn’t despise him long before what happen with deflated footballs. The league finally has caught on to our detestation for him and his team but nothing has really changed around here. People have always become a little emotional when speaking of that team and any of its players. This town marked Sunday on their calendar a long time ago and Bad Morty and his squad need to be ready for one of the most involved and hostile Bills crowds ever.
He shall not be named this week. Instead he will go as Bad Morty. I am sure you can figure out why. The Bills organization deserves this opportunity. This weekend could be the beginning of something special if we go out there and just do our job…..sorry I think I just threw up in my mouth saying that. Seriously though, everyone in that stadium that is pulling for the white on whites needs to know their role come kickoff. That means deafening crowd noise every time he is out there. That means avoiding stupid penalties and personal changes. That means running it down their throat every chance we get and going over the top when they decide to pack it in. That means out-smarting one of the smartest and sneakiest coaches in history. That means sticking to your game plan and putting their guy on his butt all day. If those things happen the Bills will immediately become relevant in a league that has forgotten about them for a long time. There will be no moral victories. Shutting down Luck was one thing but getting after Bad Morty is another. They will come here prepared and focused. Their coach will make sure of that. We must do the same if we are ever to be taken serious by them and the rest of the league. Sure its week 2, but this game will most likely be a spring board for one team and a reality check for another.
Take it all in Bills fans. Sunday will be a different feeling than you are use to. The electricity you will feel is just a small taste of what things could be like around year for years to come. I may have missed that big win back in 2011 but there is no way I am missing this win. Not this time. Go Bills.
