Welcome to "MLB Corner," our periodical look at the current season, complete with knee-jerk reactions, and usually a list or two. Stay tuned throughout the season for more coverage.
After the first month of the season players are starting to kick the hooded sweatshirts and wool caps in favor of long sleeve shirts and regular caps. Who knows, maybe by Memorial Day there won’t be anymore “inclement weather” game cancellations.
Some guys have started fast and kept going while some have already started to fade back to their mean.
We’ve already seen a milestone achieved, Albert Pujols hitting his 500th career homerun, another pitcher-Ivan Nova go see Dr. James Andrews for Tommy John surgery, and the Milwaukee Brewers continue their hot start by having the best record in baseball.
This week’s list | top right handed starters so far this season:
1. Jose Fernandez- Miami. He has been compared to Doc Gooden already and with a 4-1 record and 65 K’s in 46 innings of work. Dominated the Braves in back to back starts to close out April.
2. Zack Greinke- LAD. No Kershaw, no problem for LA. Greinke has taken the reigns and posted a 5-0 record with 46 K’s in 35 innings with 6 walks.
3. Adam Wainwright-Stl. He is 5-2 with a complete game shutout and 46 K’s in 50 innings. He’s not been overpowering and has an uncharacteristic 13 walks already but consistency breeds success and Wainwright is nothing if not consistent.
4. Masahiro Tanaka- NYY. As stated in last edition of MLB Corner, Tanaka has been as advertised going 4-0 with 51 K’s in 43 innings. Splitter has been devastating.
5. Felix Hernandez-SEA. King Felix is holding the rotation together in Seattle while it seems like every other starter is on the DL. Boasting a 3-1 record and 53 K’s in 46 innings Hernandez looks to be just as good as his reputation despite a slight decrease in velocity.
Just missed:
Johnny Cueto, Cincinnati: 50 strikeouts 2 complete games, Stephen Strasberg, Washington- 53 K’s in 35 innings, Max Scherzer, Detroit- 51 K’s in 39 innings. Mark Buerhle, Tor- 4 wins and had given up only 2 earned runs total before last week’s poor outing against Boston.
Flash Watch!
Charlie Blackmon’s average has fallen over the last week to a non-video game number of .374, which yes is still probably still a video game number but it’s less than .400 for the first time this season. What’s most surprising about this is he has 7 walks this year and 10 strikeouts in 99 at-bats, that’s Pujols-esq plate discipline. He is still sitting against most lefty starters, but does have 1.047 OPS against lefties when he does face them. It might be time to make this guy a full time player.
Real Deal?
In my preseason prognostications I, and everyone else outside of the San Francisco Giants locker room, had the Dodgers winning the NL West. Well after making a sweeping statement of the Braves last weekend the Giants are at the top of the division and may not be looking back. Sergio Romo is closing strong starts from underrated free agent signee Tim Hudson, and despite a lackluster opening month by the rest of the starters the bullpen has held them in games for the offense to hit a home run to win the game. The offense ranks 2nd in MLB in homers, and they play their home games in a “pitcher friendly” ballpark.
