This weekend is perhaps one of the Dandiest days of the year as the 141st Kentucky Derby is held at Churchill Downs. Men and women alike dress to impress at this event, and while many of us aren't fortunate enough to attend the race, Derby Parties are a great way to not only view the race with friends but to also dress the part as well. One of the rare times when "peacocking" is encouraged, there are no rules when dressing for a Derby party. There are however, a few key articles of clothing which are always encouraged. Buffalo Dandy thankfully has you covered from head to toe so you can arrive at your Derby Party in style.
First off, Seersucker is one of the most popular fabrics at the Derby. This traditional fabric is embraced as not only a sign that spring is here, but is also functional as it keeps the race fans cool in the heat. We suggest picking one up and keeping it not only for summer weddings, but also for the annual Seersucker Ride hosted by the BLRC.
Next, straw hats are often the headwear of choice among men and O'Connell's has a fantastic one in their store, which looks as Southern as it gets.
Madras is another fabric which is very popular at the Derby, as are bow ties. Get the best of both worlds with this official Buffalo Dandy Madras Bow Tie.
BD favorite Kiel James Patrick recently release a new line of shirts called the Seaweather Collection which features a variety of sun-kissed oxfords and patterned shirts. Pastels are always in fashion at the Derby, and this is lightweight and button down will pair perfectly with a pair of Go To Hell Pants.
Finish your outfit off with some finishing touches like a pop color belt, pocket square and of course a pair white wingtips like these ones from Cole Hann, and you're ready to hit the Derby in style.
Last but not least, we must not forget one of the best parts of the event which is the official drink of The Kentucky Derby: The Mint Julep. Woodford Reserve is the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby and every year they offer a limited edition drink which retails for an incredible $1,000 on race day. You can get your own souvenir cup online for $35, but Kegworks also has these cups available which are, in our opinion, the only way to enjoy a mint julep.
Best of luck on race day everyone!
