Debra Eck loves sewing, the tidiness and efficiency of it, the way a line of stitches can transform a flat piece of fiber into a form. She loves how stitches can hold things together, how they can repair and patch. Eck also loves the sheer decorative elegance of embroidery, how a line of sewing can define an area, or fill it with texture. There is a great peace in the fluency of the stitches, they are a point of calm and certainty around which the chaos of her busy life rotates.  Many of these activities were chores for our ancestors, but for Eck they are a luxury, a way of moving slowly and peacefully in the world.

“My life is like the life of generations of women, spinning the plates, caught in the juggling act of being a woman, wife and mother, artist and activist, mentor and teacher,” says Eck. As an artist she feels the pull of this continuum, a kinship with women in the past. Their routine, almost invisible activities, created the structures which tethered civilizations. Woman as the fixed point around which her household moves, the center of a great geometry that shapes our daily lives.

Debra Eck will also host an artist talk on September 29 at noon
