As the First World War raged in Europe, Ernest Hemingway became an ambulance driver in Italy for the Red Cross. After being wounded and a period of recuperation, he became a foreign correspondent, which profoundly impacted his literary style. He moved to Paris and joined a group of expatriate writers. Hemingway captures the impact of the brutality and chaos of war on the psyche of a generation in his novel A Farewell to Arms.

Join Mary Sorrels for her discussion on the impact of Ernest Hemingway's work. Ms. Sorrels is a curriculum developer and presenter of reading, writing and assessment workshops for educational organizations including WNY school districts, College Board, NYSRA, and NYSEC. Her areas of specialty and expertise center upon deconstructing text for meaning, writing process workshops and the study of class and gender in classic and contemporary literature.

This talk will also take place on Saturday, May 5 at 1:00pm at the Buffalo & Erie County Central Library.
