ABOUT THE HIGHWAYMEN: The Highwaymen are a group of 26 affiliated African American artists who created stylized, impressionistic landscapes of Florida’s lush wildernesses, beachscapes, and magnificent sunsets. They were most closely associated with central Florida painting in the early 1950s through the late 1970s.
Disenfranchised socio-economically and, at the time, not welcomed into Florida's mainstream art establishment, the Highwaymen grappled with a constant struggle against systemic racism. These artists broke with many artistic traditions of the time. Today, the Highwaymen have finally received national and international recognition for their unique style, creativity, and business acumen.
