Jane's Walk is a movement of free, citizen-led walking tours inspired by urban activist Jane Jacobs. The walks give folks a chance to tell stories about their neighborhoods, explore their communities, and connect with neighbors.Walks are typically 60 to 90 minutes, and the topic can be anything you like, as long as it's non-partisan, non-commercial, and related to the neighborhood where you're walking.

Currently, three Janes Walks are planned in Buffalo:

1. Allen Street: 180+ Years of Neighborhood History

Friday, May 6 at 7:00 - 8:00pm

Meet at Allen and Wadsworth

For more than 180 years, Allentown’s “Main Street” has mirrored the growth, decline and renewal of Buffalo. Today, Allentown is on the upswing with several significant building restorations. And soon, the streetscape itself will be reconstructed to make it more attractive and safer for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Walk leader Richard Haynes has lived in Allentown for 40 years. He is a past president and still-active member of the Allentown Association.

2. The Fillmore & Leroy / Highland Park neighborhood – A Gem waiting to be re-polished

Saturday, May 7 at 1:00 - 3:00pm

Start & end at the TriMain Building, 2495 Main (corner of Main & Jewett)

Drained by decades of disinvestment, this once-vibrant neighborhood is a gem waiting to be polished again. We will discuss the history & plans for this once vibrant community.

We will start the walk at the TriMain Building, where we will discuss the early history and development of this area, including how it was shaped by proximity to the NY Central Beltline. As we walk, we will make stops to talk about local businesses that once lined the streets.

Walk leader Derik Kane, CNUa, is the Senior Planner for Genesee County, where he promotes re-investing in neighborhoods, smart growth, and economic development opportunities. He first became interested in the Central Park/Main and Leroy neighborhood from listening to stories of his father growing up in the area.

3. The Story of the Hydraulics: What's New?

Starts at Larkin Square, Led By Chris Hawley

May 7, 2016, 4:00pm, 1.5 Hours

Chris Hawley, urbanist and history lover, will reveal the story of the Hydraulics, Buffalo’s first manufacturing district and one of America’s premier industrial heritage sites. This year's walk will include updates on the latest projects in the neighborhood, including new loft and commercial developments, plus insights about the district's new Beer-Oriented Development (BOD) sites. After the walk, the group will head over for an optional dinner and drinks at the Hydraulic Hearth, 716 Swan St., at 5:30 pm. UPDATE: The Hydraulics walk will include interior tours of 500 Seneca and the Buffalo Distilling Co.
