Parkside Garden and Architecture Tour
Sunday 28th Jun, 2015
The Parkside Garden and Architecture Tour encompasses many unique attributes. Its area is less than 1/2 square mile, making it an easily walkable day adventure to explore the 40+ gardens on the tour. It encompasses the jewel of the Olmsted Crescent — Delaware Park. When being developed back in the 1880s, homes in nascent Parkside were specified by the personal tastes and requirements of the owners, creating a myriad mix of architectural styles and sizes. The gently curvilinear street layout is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a tribute to its Olmsted design. A day ambling through the tree-lined streets of Parkside exploring hidden spaces hidden behind fences and hedges, is an experience not to be missed.
As a supplementary feature to the garden tour, we offer a separate guided History and Architecture Walk. Our local resident historian will guide you through the nuances of architectural style elements and Gilded Age history of the neighborhood — interspersed with enjoyable local folklore.
The nominal cost for the full color map and garden directory is $8, available on the day of the tour at the Church of the Good Shepherd HQ. After 3pm, the price is reduced to $5. The optional Guided Architecture and History Walk is available on a First Come- First Serve basis at HQ for an additional $10. All proceeds help support us with programming and services of the Parkside Community Association, a 501(c)III, Not-For Profit, organization.
