Three of the city's best Japanese spots cluster within half a mile on Elmwood and Lexington — Kuni's setting the standard for traditional precision since 1996, Sato rewriting what a Buffalo sushi dinner can look like, and Wasabi holding down the accessible middle ground. If you're eating sushi in Buffalo proper, this is where you start.
Buffalo's most celebrated sushi counter. Chef Kuni Sato opened in 1996 and hasn't needed to chase trends since — pristine fish, traditional sashimi, a room that fills quietly and intentionally. Dinner only, Tuesday through Saturday.
Chef Satomi Smith brings her Fukui upbringing to this Elmwood flagship — house-made noodles, scratch-made ramen broth, and a sashimi program that punches well above its neighborhood-restaurant price point. Reservations taken; no reservations at the sister Sato Ramen on Main St.
The original Wasabi location — a Buffalo-born concept opened in 2007, inspired by owner Kang's first trip to Japan. Reliable rolls, fresh sashimi, and a lunch-through-late-evening schedule that makes it the most accessible Japanese option on the strip.
North Buffalo
Hertel Avenue's dining scene has been evolving in recent years, and Taisho Bistro is its most ambitious Japanese-leaning entry — a true izakaya concept, open for lunch and dinner. Taisho blurs the line between craft dining room and Japanese sports bar. Kyoto on Maple Road in the north brings a different proposition entirely: full hibachi tables, a proper sushi bar, seven days a week.
WNY's only Japanese izakaya. Taisho blends cozy Japanese comfort food with a vibrant sports bar atmosphere — the mega TV behind the bar and the award-winning ramen on the same menu shouldn't work, but it does. Open for both lunch and dinner, which almost no one on Hertel can say.
The North Buffalo corridor's most complete Japanese kitchen — hibachi tables, a full sushi bar, classic rolls through Emperor's Dinners, open seven days — the pick when you want a full sit-down Japanese dinner without driving to Elmwood.
Delaware Corridor
Kumo's Delaware location covers the Japanese-American comfort zone well — a broad sushi roll menu, hibachi options, and consistent quality that keeps the neighborhood returning. Also has a second location in Depew for the suburbs.
A Kenmore Avenue staple blending sushi with a broader seafood and Thai menu — handy for groups who can't agree on one cuisine, a block over from the Delaware corridor's Japanese anchor.

South Buffalo
South Buffalo's neighborhood sushi spot. Oishi keeps the menu approachable — familiar rolls, bento options, and a dining room that doesn't ask you to make reservations weeks out. Good for families, solid for takeout.
McKinley Parkway's Japanese standby — sushi rolls alongside a full Japanese menu, serving the South Buffalo corridor a few minutes from Cazenovia Park.

Amherst / Williamsville
All-you-can-eat sushi, sashimi, and Thai dishes under one roof — Wind is the area's most talked-about AYCE concept. Expect a wait on Friday and Saturday evenings. The breadth of the menu, spanning Japanese and Thai, makes it one of the more useful spots in the suburbs for groups with mixed tastes.
The second Wasabi location carries the same DNA as the Elmwood original — fresh rolls, sashimi, pan-Asian kitchen plates — in a plaza setting that's easier to get to for residents east of the city. Mon–Thu 11am–9pm, Fri–Sat 11am–10pm, closed Sunday.
The most expansive all-you-can-eat Japanese operation in WNY. Samurai offers fresh sushi, sashimi, tempura, and hibachi in a format that has made it a neighborhood fixture in East Amherst. Reservations available via OpenTable. Popular for large groups and special occasions.
Tonawanda
Tonawanda's dual-cuisine standby. Kani covers both Japanese and Thai with enough depth in each to satisfy regulars on either side. Good sushi selection alongside a full Thai menu — practical for groups, solid for solo weeknight dining.
A dedicated sushi bar on Delaware Avenue rounding out Tonawanda's Japanese options. Featuring a smart menu of classics and special rolls, plus bento and kitchen entrees at agreeable prices for the elevated value.

Depew
The original all-you-can-eat sushi destination of WNY. Saika's format — unlimited sushi, sashimi, and hibachi at a fixed price — drew the crowds that proved the market existed. Still drawing them. Buffalo News recognized it as a go-to for the AYCE format.
The Depew branch of Kumo, giving the Transit Road suburbs the same Japanese-American comfort menu as the Delaware Avenue original.

Consistently one of the highest-rated Japanese spots in the South Towns.
A small family-owned Japanese restaurant in McKinley Mall Plaza. Ichiban serves hand-rolled sushi and hibachi with the kind of consistent care that small family operations do best — limited seats, personal service, and a menu that doesn't need to be long to be good.
An all-you-can-eat buffet format that folds a sushi bar in alongside Mongolian grill and Italian stations — the most casual, kid-friendly option in the South Towns cluster.
