Turns Out the Sabres Just Needed a Little Time
Buffalo's Back. And the Wait Was Worth It.
Count 'em: Fourteen seasons. The Buffalo Sabres haven't been to the playoffs since 2011.
That's well before TikTok existed. Barack Obama was in his first term. Tage Thompson — the team's breakout best player — was literally 13 years old.
How bad was it, and how did it turn around?
Bad. Actually, historically bad — the longest active playoff drought in all of North American pro sports. Through bad drafts, worse trades, coaching carousels, and false dawns, Buffalo Sabres fans have shown up, season after season, not expecting much to cheer about. This season's start wasn't exactly promising either. Buffalo was barely above .500 in December when ownership decided enough was enough and brought in a new general manager, Jarmo Kekalainen.
What happened next was kind of wild. The team went on a 29-5-2 tear and went from near the bottom of their division to first place. Same roster, new direction.
The talent was always there — especially defenseman Rasmus Dahlin (captain and the anchor of the whole team) and Tage Thompson up front, who had a gold medal at the Olympics this year. They just needed someone to pull it all together.
So what's the team look like heading into the playoffs?
With less than two weeks left in the regular season, they're 44-20-8, tied with Tampa Bay for first in the Atlantic Division, and they've not been shy about making some key buys — they went out and added pieces specifically to win now.
At the trade deadline they picked up four players, the most notable being Luke Schenn, a veteran who has two Stanley Cup championships under his belt. When you've got a locker room full of guys who have never been to the playoffs before, having someone who's actually won it all matters more than any stat line.
They also grabbed Logan Stanley, a 6-foot-7 defenseman who's basically a human traffic cone in front of the net, plus depth forwards Sam Carrick and Tanner Pearson to round out the bottom of the lineup.
What should fans actually expect?
The realistic goal is simple: show up, compete, and prove this isn't a fluke.
The goalie — Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen — will be the biggest wildcard. If he's sharp when it matters, this team can make a deep run. If he struggles, it could be a short spring.
After all these years, Buffalo fans have earned the right to get excited about this one.
