Everyone loves a good before and after, especially in design and this month I'd like to start a series of makeovers to inspire you at home. Sometimes I'll share crafts, DIY projects, or just a simple furniture makeover with some paint.

This month's before and after is a fireplace in my home office. The room has nice architectural interest with bay windows and wood floors, but the fireplace was original dingy brick that needed some life.

The Before

The walls in the room were light peach and the tan, dirty brick surrounding the fireplace gave things a faded and outdated look with no visual interest. The plan was to freshen up the brick and walls, plus add some life with bright accessories.

The After

Although many people frown away from painting wood or brick, this was a much needed improvement to the faded and worn facade. After washing it and cleaning out the firebox, it got two coats of primer and two coats of paint. Some accent colors and accessories were much-needed too.

The wall above the mantel got an accent color in medium gray, and the inside is a darker charcoal. I built a frame for the art, which came from a salvage shop. Disco balls are popular home accessories these days so why not put one in an unused fireplace?
