Film: Gerhard Richter Painting, 2011
The German artist Gerhard Richter is one of the leading figures in today’s contemporary art world. In Gerhard Richter Painting, director Corinna Belz provides a rare glimpse into this famously camera- and media-shy seventy-nine-year-old artist’s process as he creates a series of large-scale abstract canvasses in his unique style using large brushes and a massive squeegee to apply and then scrape off layer after layer of brightly colored paint. Rare archival material is also included in this film along with footage and interviews by leading critics, the artist’s collaborators, and his American gallerist, Marian Goodman.
ABOUT AK CONTEMPORARY
AK Contemporary is a new series at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery that will focus on contemporary artists. Each program will begin with a lecture in which Assistant Curator of Education Jessica DiPalma will provide an in-depth look at the artist’s life and work and will conclude with the screening of a documentary film in which the artist is featured. This series will mark the first time many of these films have been screened in Western New York. View All Upcoming Programs
