Opening Reception: Stephen Coppola / Buildings of Buffalo and Beyond
Wednesday 12th Sep, 2018
Wednesday, 12 September - Sunday, 4 November 2018
“Living in Buffalo, with its rich past, I felt a need to paint the iconic structures which made it the great blue-collar city it is.” - Stephen Coppola
This exhibition of works by Stephen Coppola features iconic buildings of Buffalo, as well as New Orleans, and Paris. Some structures are painted from memory and some from recent viewing. Coppola taught himself how to paint only ten years ago at age 60 to relieve stress. His style of painting infers the direct line isn't always the quickest, as his buildings tend to be wavy and curvy. One critic remarked, “They seem to be alive and breathing.”
Born in 1947, Stephen Coppola attended Lafayette High School. A blue-collar Buffalonian his entire life, except for a half a dozen times living elsewhere, Stephen Coppola is a product of the West Side of the 50s, where he met his wife Jean. Together they have traveled the world and raised two beautiful children. He is a Vietnam Veteran and had a long career as a construction worker.
Coppola has had one-man exhibitions at Rust Belt Books, Spot Coffee, JCC Art Gallery, Dnipro Ukrainian Cultural Center, Cosmopolitan Art Gallery, has been part of the Infringement Festival, and is represented by Dana Tilou Fine Arts, all here in Buffalo, New York.
