ABOUT THE SHOW:
'Don’t Be So Blue' is a single body of work produced by artists Mizin Shin and Rachel Shelton. For Shin and Shelton, working collaboratively is hardly a stretch. While the two maintain separate and often contrasting studio practices, there are several points of connection between their work: both artists are printmakers with a background in drawing; both are interested in analyzing connections and systems from both macro andmicro perspectives; and both usually begin with a concept and build a body of work from there.
In planning this exhibition, the two artists decided to step back from their customary starting points and return to intuitive making, focusing on basic elements of design: color, composition, line, and shape. One artist would begin each piece, and then trade it with the other. Working instinctively and reactively, the second artist would complete it. The resulting artworks display a merging of style and concept in the form of drawings, prints, and a large-scale artists' book.
