688 Abbott Rd Buffalo, NY 14220A book signing and discussion with Jamie Scalise and Bob DiCesare, authors of “He’s Out! The True Story of Infamous Prison Escapee Richard Matt,” will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at Dog Ears Bookstore & Café. The nonprofit community bookstore is located at 688 Abbott Road in South Buffalo.
In June of 2015, Matt, a double murderer, and David Sweat, a cop killer, escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility in mountainous upstate New York. National media, fascinated by the escape’s resemblance to the one in the movie The Shawshank Redemption, provided constant updates during their three weeks on the lam.
“I’m sure I followed the reports closer than most. Richard Matt was my dad,” said Scalise. “I knew him but a short time, four years in total, yet his death compelled me to piece together the rest of his story through key figures in his life – including fellow escapee Dave Sweat, civilian accessory Joyce Mitchell, and even my mom. We had spoken little of him over the years. My journey through his past, which included a final return trip to the infamous manhole in Dannemora, provided needed closure to a shocking episode of my life launched when I received word that he’s out!”
Scalise currently resides in Wheatfield with her husband and two daughters, with a third child on the way. She’s a master cosmetologist who works out of her home salon. DiCesare is a former sportswriter and deputy sports editor at The Buffalo News. He resides in the City of Tonawanda.
