The Great Contraption Race
Thursday 30th Jul, 2015 → Saturday 1st Aug, 2015
This fun, 2-person and 4-person team race down the lower Niagara River on floating contraptions begins in Lewiston and finishes in Youngstown, during a fun-filled day of food, entertainment and family activities. Food and beverage will be supplied at the finish line with music and awards for team competitors and their support crews. This area is also open to spectators and visitors as well as the communities that make up the lower Niagara River Region.
A VIP Cruise on the Niagagra River aboard the Niagara Belle on Thursday (July 30) kicks off the Race weekend.
The floating contraptions are designed and built by teams out of just about anything (that does not harm our enviorment), may only be powered by human, solor or sail power, and must be able to float down the River.
Teams get extra points if the contraption is amphibious allowing it to steer and roll on a slightly graded pitch into the Niagara River in Lewiston on its own (or with a push) from a starting gate GCR’s race officials. If the contraption does not have wheels the team must be able to slide or carry it to the water. The contraption must also be able to travel down the mighty Niagara River 6.2 miles to Youngstown, NY where you must then be able to roll or pull it out of the river with its team crew’s help to the finish line. Costumes and themed contraptions are highly recommended.
The first annual GCR took place in August 2014.
Proceeds from this great event are going to the It Happened To Alexa Foundation, a national charity based in Lewiston, NY that assists victims of sexual assault and their families.
