On Sunday, February 26 at 3pm, Univerisity at Buffalo voice facultyTiffany Du Mouchelle, soprano will be joined by California based pianist, Kyle Adam Blair for Shadow Voices, a recital of songs by American composers, that celebrate those who stand in the shadows, who push boundaries, and change the world.  The program begins with Joseph Schwantner’s Two Poems of Agueda Pizarro: Shadowinnower; Black Anemones. Pizarro is a Spanish-American poet, whose writing often highlights feminine strength and Schwantner sets her vivid imagery between water and fire. Next on the program is William Harvey’s Speaking for the Afghan Woman. A collection of traditional poetry by women combined with contemporary (and often forbidden) poetry by contemporary Afghan women, highlights many of the issues still being dealt with by women there. Harvey’s settings include rich accompaniments, soaring lines, and folk melodies. The final piece on the program is George Crumb’s Apparition, a setting of Walt Whitman’s “When lilacs last on the dooryard bloom’d”, an ode to Abraham Lincoln after his death. Crumb’s setting is fantastical and elemental, featuring bird songs, spirit wanderings, and even the stars at night.
