Bike and Build in Buffalo
Tuesday 27th Jun, 2017
Bike & Build engages young adults in service-oriented cycling trips to raise money and awareness for the affordable housing cause. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that fosters a sustained connection to community. We advocate for the need for affordable housing in thousands of communities across the country.
Northern United States (NUS) is one Bike & Build’s OGs- having been around since 2003. Kicking off in Portsmouth, NH, riders start traversing New England mountains on day one, rolling through the Green Mountains and the Adirondacks en route to Niagara Falls. The Midwest will play some of its aces, as rider swoop through Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Chicago, Madison, and St Paul and spend close to two weeks in Minnesota, dontchaknow. Then the west starts to call and the route skims the Canadian border through North Dakota and Montana with Glacier National Park waiting on the other side. The route is capped off by the Cascade Mountains in Washington and wraps in Bellingham.
Each of our 8 trips consists of 32 young adults (4 leaders, 28 participants) who fundraise at least $4,500 prior to the summer, as well as dedicate sweat equity hours to an affordable housing organization in their area. Over the course of the summer the trips stop for Build Days about once a week across the country. Additionally, they give community presentations at host locations to encourage local communities to discuss affordable housing issues in their area.
