Based on a manuscript length study of the 98th Ohio and a scheduled talk in June at the Society of Civil War Historians conference in Richmond, Virginia, the presentation examines how volunteers from the state’s Upper River Valley, an area of eastern Ohio that generally opposed slaveholding expansion, went to war to put down a rebellion that threatened what they held most dear.

Thomas M. Grace is an adjunct professor of History, having taught at the Cornell University Industrial Labor Relations School (Buffalo), D’Youville University, and the State University of New York/Erie. His manuscript, Citizens and Soldiers of the Upper River Valley: Sectional Unionism and the 98th Ohio’s Civil War is before Kent State University Press for the press’s “Interpreting the Civil War” series.

Talk starts at 6:30pm

Admission $12, Free for Members.
