Freedom to Read Event: Evolution of an Activist
When a book ban was suggested in her school library, Julia Garnett didn't stay quiet, she spoke up. What began as one student fighting to keep a single book on the shelf has grown into a national platform. Her anti-censorship writing has appeared in Ms. Magazine and School Library Journal, and her advocacy has been recognized at the White House.
Join us for an in-person conversation with Julia as she traces her own evolution from a high schooler defending stories in her own library to a leading young voice in the fight against censorship nationwide. She'll talk about what it means to see your own identity targeted on the page, why queer stories are so often the first ones pulled from shelves, and how young people are pushing back.
This program is presented in partnership with GLYS (Growing LGBTQ+ Youth Support of Western New York), who will be on site.
